Getting Tough On Litter
Mecklenburg County solid waste officials have made littering a main priority following a directive by county commissioners to develop an education and enforcement campaign. "While there are many effective local, state and even national programs in place, there hasn't been local coordination of these efforts," said Cary Saul, Director of Mecklenburg County's Land Use & Environmental Services Agency. A position has been dedicated to facilitate that coordination. Please call or alexandr.chentsov@gmail.com Brenda Barger, Litter Prevention Coordinator.
The Environment is Everyone's Concern
Global warming, air and water quality, noise pollution, acid rain, recycling, brown fields, hazardous waste, world population growth, oil spills, composting, endangered species, mass transit, green buildings, ozone, alternative fuels and energy, litter.
While some of these words conjure up hopeful, warm and fuzzy feelings, others bring forth images of gloom, doom and down right depression. The environment and pollution are of global concern and effects the quality of life for each of us.
At times, we may feel overwhelmed and frustrated by the magnitude of it all, believing that we can't make a difference. Nothing could be further from the truth. The smallest action, such as NOT littering attributes to the improvement of the environment. As simple as that may seem, the impact is significant. Be willing to pick up litter, whether as a volunteer of an organized clean up project or as a concerned citizen.
